East Coast Trip part 8: Washington DC

We woke up Monday morning and had a yummy breakfast and Mike and I went to the gym. Then we headed to our nations capital. This was the third time Mike and I have been to DC in the last 4 years so we are pretty familiar with this city. Its a great place to go especially if you love walking and of course the history here is amazing.

Our first stop was the air and space museum out at the airport. We went there first because its no where near the mall and we didn't want to drive in and out of the city. We've been to this museum many times but it is always impressive and you forget how big some of these planes are and how big the space shuttle is. It really is amazing.

Joshua's favorite is the SR-71 Blackbird

The Kingfisher
The Enola Gay is my favorite. Its so pretty :)

After the Air and Space Museum Mike, Stacey and I headed to the Holocaust Museum and Doug and Josh went to some art museums. I had been to the Holocaust museum but it has been a long time. The Holocaust museum is a very sobering experience. Its so dark and quiet so you are completely focused on what you're seeing and reading. Its a very immersive experience and it is a very well done museum.

After the museum we went over to the Smithsonian Castle to meet Doug and Josh to decide where to head next. The museum is pretty but its basically a visitors center for the National Mall. It has information on all the museums with a map and a food court.

We debated going to one of the museums but we decided to walk the mall and see the monuments instead. Mike and I needed to eat lunch so Stacey, Doug and Joshua headed to the Washington Monument and then we followed and met them there. When you look at the mall things look so much closer together but it takes a long time to walk from one monument to another. We got to see the capital but it was under construction to we headed in the opposite direction towards the Lincoln Memorial. As always, I was blown away by the size of the monuments and how beautiful they all are.

Down the hill from the Washington monument is the WWII Memorial which is beautiful and one of the best memorials on the mall.

Next we continued on the long walk to the Lincoln Memorial. The Lincoln memorial is my favorite. Since we've been to DC so many times in the past few years Mike and I just headed to see Lincoln while Stacey and Doug went to the Vietnam memorial and Joshua got food. Then we all met at Lincoln.

So much prettier when the reflecting pool actually has water in it

Stacey and Doug wanted to go check out some of the other monuments that we didn't want to see again so Mike, Josh and I headed back to the car. Once we were all back together we headed back to the hotel. We got pizza for dinner and watched Pitch Perfect and then got some much needed rest before our second day in DC.
