I've really enjoyed doing it with him everyday. Its fun to watch him learn and grow and he also gets some one on one time with me. Each unit is 2 weeks long and we do letters and shapes and counting all related to a broad topic like apples, colors, clothing, transportation and lots of other fun topics. We also read a lot of books. I've been getting so many books from the library that the librarians know me and just go get my books that I have reserved before I even ask!
Our first unit was all about apples. So we sorted apples and we read lots of books about apples. We counted apples and we rolled apples and we learned the letter A. One of my favorite parts about it was when I hid the letter A around the house and Daniel had to go on an A hunt. At the end of the unit we planted apple seeds and made an apple cobbler! He did such a great job with this unit. He learned the letter A really quickly and was able to find it in books and he did an awesome job with sorting and learning new words to describe things.
We worked on fine motor skills- he had to poke each spot with a toothpick |
The second unit was all about colors! I was so excited because Daniel loves colors and knows all of them so I knew he would enjoy it. We learned the letter R for rainbow and read fun books like Rainbow Fish and Brown Bear Brown Bear. By the end of the first week he could read Brown Bear Brown Bear to me.
We also practiced sorting with fruit loops and making graphs. We talked about which color had the most and least. We also got to practice mixing colors after we read Mouse Paint.
We're currently in his fourth unit and he's doing well with his letters. He finds them everywhere now. He is still struggling with counting but little by little its improving. His vocabulary is growing too and we're working on getting him help with his speech so hopefully that will help too. Its great to watch him learn though and see how excited he gets when he knows he got it!
